So, Sarah, How Is Alaska's Proximity to Russia Relevant?
This Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

From the second half of Katie Couric's interview with vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, airing tonight:

COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land– boundary that we have with– Canada. It– it's funny that a comment like that was– kind of made to– cari– I don't know, you know? Reporters–

COURIC: Mock?

PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.

COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.

PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our– our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia–

COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We– we do– it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is– from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to– to our state.

So given her logic the governors of Florida, Texas and Arizona, or the mayor of San Diego even are foreign policy gurus. They probably know way more about Cuba/Haiti, and Mexico/Central America than she could ever dream to know about Russia.

You want stupid? How about ole Joe Biden telling Katie Couric all about how Franklin D. Roosevelt got on TV during the big crash of 1929 to talk to the American people! Good Lord Man! There was no TV in 1929 and Herbert Hoover was our President. The look on Couric's face was indeed priceless. Or, when he asked the crippled man in the wheelchair (recent rally) to stand up and take a bow. Or when he misspoke on Barry's position on clean air/coal. He said they hate it! Don't want it! Oops, Barry has promised over $200 million to that industry. He even admitted Hillary would be a better choice. Ah, honey, don't we know it. Joe Biden knows stupid on a pretty intimate basis.

Yeah, I don't think any of the VP candidates were ever considered for the Rhodes scholarship. Palin is vapid and Biden is a walking verbal train wreck. But guess what? It's like a 99.9% probability that neither of the two will ever be President of the United States. So don't worry so much about what they say. VP is a pretty powerless position. I think Dog Catcher probably has more say in people's lives.

Dana's right — the average Brooklyn 8 y.o. could provide a more cogent discussion of our foreign policy vis a vis (using those words, btw) the FSU and any other country. Brooklyn is 4x the pop of Alaska, and has 60 nationalities with 140 languages spoken.

Palin should take the subway out to Brighton Beach and hunker down with some of the thousands of Russian-speaking immigrants there.

Based on Palin's theory, Brookyn Borough President Marty Markowitz should be running for VP. Not a bad idea, actually.

@ Soul Brother Kab: True to an extent, but McCain's age and health need to be considered, as well as his motivations in choosing her. Country first my arse. His deeply cynical ploy in choosing her as a running mate despite her obvious lack of qualifications and abilites speaks volumes to his lack of respect for the Amreican people.

Those of you who do support Palin….state your case (please use footnotes to justify the points you make so we can regerence them). It would be better for her if you actually supported her and her platform with the FACTS of what she KNOWS rather than just throw stones at Biden. Ok….let's hear from you now!

Better yet….let the debates begin…..the debates where TWO candidates show up!

@Soul Brother Kab — I'm sure I speak for actuaries everywhere when I say that John McCain is significantly more likely to die in office of natural causes than is Barack Obama. So Palin isn't as easy to dismiss as we'd like.

Personally I hope we can forget all about her forever on November 5.

Barry has been a smoker for most of his life…only quit recently. He's more than likely growing a huge tumor on his lung cavity. Oh, and all that coke he used to do? Serious drug issues in his past…probably have ruined his nasal cavaties….
The only relief I can possibly feel if he does win is that "they" have already predicted this next Presidency to be full of so many impending disasterous economic situations, along with the current war, etc…that it will be a one-term Presidency and an unsuccessful one at that. Poof! he'll be gone quicker than he got there. I know they'll need some community help somewhere.

Don't forget…..McCain's mother is 96 years young! Several generations in his family have lived to be in their nineties. Good DNA! Any man who could have put up with what he did when he was in captivity for 5 years isn't going to let being President and all it's worries/stress bring him down.

Ms Electric,

you're just delusional. Praising the 'good' DNA because Mama McCain is still alived at 96 is retarded because I don't think she had as many cancer as her son. That unfortunate but it's time to be pragmatic.

And you really think McCain never did coke? please. Plus Barack wasn't an addict, twist the truth as much as you want to feel better but people like you are bringing the US down.

Socialism scares me far less than the idiocy of the current administration's handling of the economy over the last eight years. With the bailouts of AIG, Fannie and Freddie, and the rest of the failing Wall Street firms using taxpayer dollars, I don't think we're too far from socialism in the way we're effectively nationalizing out banking system.

But Sarah Palin's ineptitude and inability to explain anything cogently is even scarier.

President Clinton could not get his own party to revamp Fannie and freddie. Have you forgotton what committees that idiot Barney Frank and that crook Chris Dodd chair. You need to bone up on your economic facts before you start blaming this administration on everything. If we do bail out Wall Street and we we move one step closer to socilism you can thank barney, chris and the rest of the dems.

I am sure when you talk about Sara's ineptitude and inability to explain anything cogently you are comparing her to your superior ability as an orator. And have you ever been elected to anything? Whens your next press conference?

#1) Any Dems FOR the bailout are for it because the people who will be hurt most by massive bank and insurer failures are the working people who have policies and/or loans. So, bite me.

#2) The Dems caused the economic crisis? Really? You mean radical deregulation initiated by Reagan and continued with Republican congresses didn't cause it? Why didn't Mr. Maverick initiate any economic reform during his 26 years, many times chairing the economic committees responsible for such a crapfest? Bite me.

#3) Republicans have criticized her lack of intellectual capacity and lack of functional experience in office. Republicans. Smart, educated ones. Ones who can argue conservative fiscal policies with more evidence than just calling democrats "socialists" like it's a dirty word on the playground. Bite me again.

#4) In conclusion, Palin is a dangerous moron and McCain is a lying yes-man, so bite me. :)
