Soap Opera Weekly Editor Carolyn Hinsey Fired

Breaking: Carolyn Hinsey, editor of Soap Opera Weekly and Soap Opera Digest, was just fired, we're told. Hinsey is described to us as "a truly malicious, horrible human being." If true, then more of you must have stories!

Update: "Budgetary" reasons is one excuse being thrown around, which would mean SOW would have to replace Hinsey with somebody less experienced (read: cheaper) for that to pan out. Other possibilities for her removal? Numerous HR problems and complaints about Hinsey, who's said to be "a yeller and screamer" and a "bully." "Anger management classes were mentioned several years ago," says one well-informed source.

Yeah, probably both reasons are true, but more the latter. Everything you wrote about her is true. I'm sure there is much celebrating at the Digest/Weekly offices now (pizza lunch?! cupcakes?) - and among those who survived Hinsey and found better jobs elsewhere.

Not only was she hell on wheels with the staff she abused (I can't tell you HOW many good, talented individuals SOW and SOD chewed through over the years because no one could stand to work with her), but she was also persona-non-grata with half the soap world.

For every actor she would brag about being BFFs with (and she LOVES to name drop) there would be at least 2 who hated her and refused to work with her. Even half the actors she claimed as "friends" couldn't stand her, and talked about her behind her back. They only made nice to her for professional and political reasons because she was head of the soap mag. But she was too narcissistic to know - or care.

You are correct, Mr. Mustache. And yes, Scotty, kind of like a soap, except instead of fear being instilled by Gloria Monty's clicking heels, it was Hinsey's booming voice.

Every nasty story you ever heard about Carolyn is probably true. She drove out everyone at Digest or Weekly who had talent (you can't do that without support from the top, however).

The "Big C" — as some referred to her as — was an ABC gal; she didn't even know who Charita Bauer was when it came time to do a GL anniversary issue.

She had rules for herself and she had rules for her staff — totally the opposite.

She stomped around on one set, acting like the actors were all her BFFs. They weren't. One stood behind her waving his arms at a publicst as if to say "Get rid of her!"

She had/has an obsession with one actress on a top-rated soap and always wrote about her in flattering ways. She REFUSED to write about a recast once because she "took" her "friend's" job.

Ridiculous.

She was very sensitive about her weight and size. Somebody made an on-air crack about her girth once and that person was "dead to her."

And when it came to the Digest awards, she steamrolled over other editors' choices so she could get her "friends" on the ballot.

I wasn't even going to comment, because after leaving Digest years ago because of the most evil woman who has ever lived on this planet — her name is Carolyn Hinsey, in case you didn't know it by now — I thought to myself: SHE WAS FIRED! KARMA HAS PREVAILED. WHY BOTHER TO SHARE MY THOUGHTS? THE WORLD IS NOW AT PEACE! But then I just had to shout it from the rooftops, to let others who have shared my grief know that they are not alone. I could write a novella (as I'm share we all can) at the humiliation most of us felt because she was so insecure about her gargantuan size that she felt the need to treat us like dirt on the floor. I don't even care that these might be run-on sentences. I am typing so fast at the exhiliration I am feeling today that after all these years, justice has been served. Granted, years and years and years too late — oh, Lynn Leahey and her blind eyes; nothing like wanting to come out looking like the good cop when everyone knew differently — but justice nonetheless. And if anyone comments disputing anything I've just said, it's just because they've been brainwashed to think that Ms. Hinsey actually has a career in journalism ahead of her and may just get them a job! A job at Blondie's perhaps, where I'm sure the wait staff hates her as well.

Dear Readers,

It's always a great release when a soap opera villain or villainess gets what's coming to them! Remember Roger Thorpe falling to (what we thought) was his death on GL? How about when Marlena pumped lead into Stefano on DAYS? Or when DALLAS' Jamie Ewing smashed a whipped cream dessert into Cliff Barnes' face for being such an ass?

Well, someone at Soap Opera Weekly got her 'just desserts' today! The company canned Carolyn Hinsey, known to readers as the writer of the popular "It's Only My Opinion" column and to current and past editors of SOD and SPW as "that crazy bitch, who's ruining my life."

This non-sweeps moment caught many by surprise. (Especially Carolyn!)But not me. Now, ingenues that weigh under 175 lbs. will get a break in the magazine and head writers and network executives won't live in fear that their assistants will buzz them and say, "It's Carolyn. She wants to have drinks at Blondie's!"

Alas, Roger and Cliff are gone now, but perhaps someday Carolyn, like Stefano, will come bursting out of Marlena's amoire and scare the shit out of all of us!

In the meantime, dear readers, savor this moment, and turn to crinkly page 118 and read our answer to a question about how many actors played SANTA BARBARA's C.C. Capwell. (Two friends have a steak dinner riding on it!)

The answer may surprise you (Lloyd Bochner?) But, fortunately, there was only one Carolyn!

I found this on the Daytime Confidential board. Seems as those some of the Weekly readers hated Carolyn as much as some of the current and former staff:

http://www.daytimeconfidential.....nsey-fired

from DS9Sisko:

"If this is true, I must ask what in heaven's name have I and soap fans around the globe done to deserve such a wealth of sudsy blessings recently????

The fact of the matter is that Hinsey turned Soap Opera Weekly (which I have read religiously since its inception…at newsstand prices) into a fashion obsessed, rumor mongering, spoilerific bit of yellow journalism that barely managed to remain credible despite itself.

First, let me give a bit of credit where it is justly due. Hinsey did allow some readers who disagreed with her some space to rebut her in SOW. She also helped bring attention in the pages of SOW to some of prime time's best soaps/series including Battlestar Galactica, Mad Men, and, yeah, Grey's Lobotomy…er, Anatomy. I have also found myself in agreement with Hinsey on some issues, like overzealous fans and the occasional specific opinion about this show or that storyline. Most importantly, after her most recent foray into trying to compete with OK! and US magazines, she (or somebody) recently returned more of a focus on soaps to the pages of the magazine.

But I have nothing but contempt for the way she helped turn one of the most respected soap publications into a little more than reflection of her own ego. While SOW's news and previews have been mostly solid, Hinsey long ago jettisoned the high journalistic standards set by Mimi Torchin and mostly maintained by Torchin's successors. I do not believe I ever saw as many retractions, clarifications or corrections from previous regimes as I did under Hinsey's. Long gone have been constructive and intellectual criticisms of the shows, only to be replaced by non-stop harangues that can be found on any Internet soap board including the ridiculous "Rage Page" that is dedicated to what people hate about their soaps without equal time given to what people love about their soaps.

Soap Opera Weekly used to have a substantial number of interviews with the biggest soap stars, working producers and head writers. But that has been replaced by asinine features like "Double Take" where you're supposed to spot the 10 differences in Photoshopped pictures taken from a soap scene, which is something I used to do in second grade with Weekly Reader. And, most offensive of all for this daytime fan, Carolyn's interviews with various soap celebs invariably have been more about what she wanted and didn't want to see as a fan as opposed to a credible soap journalist trying to gain insight into these people and various aspects of the genre.

And that has been the true problem with SOW for the last couple of years. SOW has become a reflection of Carolyn's "It's Only My Opinion" column in sister mag Soap Opera Digest that more often than not has belittled the very genre and industry it has covered rather than reporting soap opera news and providing critical insight into the shows and stories both negative AND positive. It is for this latter reason that Lynn Leahy, editor of SOD, has run rings around Hinsey as an editor and made SOD a much more insightful and credible publication than SOW.

When it comes to daytime drama journalism — now more than ever as the genre struggles to remain relevant and even on the air — there is a need for champions, impartial observers, and fair minded critics. Not frenemies like Carolyn Hinsey, whose editorial efforts at SOW have been as detrimental to the genre as any budget cutting producer, mob-obsessed head writers, or disgusted viewers.

I really hope this news is true. After all…it's only my opinion."

*I'm back from my three martini lunch at Blondies. Did you miss me?

*Kim Zimmer, Michelle Stafford, Cady McLain, Jeanne Cooper and I had a fabulous Ladies Who Lunch yesterday. Since Jeanne won the Emmy back in June, she was paying, so I had the surf and turf and creme brule. Lots of laughs and naughty stories were told, but I, of course, would never repeat them here. Wouldn't want to spoil your enjoyment of a show to know that an actor is hooked on meth and was arrested on the set in front of the entire cast for dealing drugs.

*On AMC, Thorston Kaye is the greatest actor ever to grace that show. He brings such class to every scene he's in. Despite being saddled with a snoozer of a storyline, he plays the throughline in every scene and you can always tell he's lusting after Erica.

*My husband Frank Valentini should get a statue in Central Park for the great things he does at OLTL. That show is on fire and its all due to Frank's genius.

*Even thought I often have to rewind the scene and turn up the volume to make sure I understand what Sonny is saying on GH, Maurice Bernard has to be the second greatest actor in daytimne, after Thorsten Kay.

*My pals Cameron Matheson and Ricky Paull Goldin are flying to Europe for the weekend and promised to bring me back some Belgian chocolates and French perfume. I told them to forget the perfume and double up on the chocolates. I asked Thosten Kaye to weigh in on this issue and he says he always prefers a pint of Guiness instead.

* A lot of readers have been *spamming* me about the state of Kim Zimmer's wardrobe on GL. As you know, I always ignore people who spam me, but did ask Thorsten Kaye to weigh in on the issue. He says, "Before long, she'll be able to fit into the 52 Regular suits I wear on AMC."

*Next week, we'll have an exclusive interview with Thorsten Kaye about what he thinks of the TV series Deal or No Deal. So make sure you buy it.

* Excuse me for a minute. My boss just called me into his office, no doubt to ask me to mentor some of the young 'uns here at the Digest offices.

Trust me, this woman was EVIL. 15 years ago when i was just starting out as a writer I was interviewed by carolyn and lynne for a job and they suggested that perhaps, since i was so new to writing for soap mags (freelance at the time) that i should 'pitch' them 15-20 story ideas for the mag so they could get a sense of my knowledge of the genre. I did just that, and never heard back. I called to follow up but my one call to each of them was never returned so i just sent a thank you note for the meeting and moved on. THREE WEEKS LATER TWO OF THOSE FULLY-FLESHED OUT STORY IDEAS RAN IN THE MAGAZINE WITHOUT MY BYLINE. As the weeks passed TWELVE of the twenty stories i pitched ran in the mag. When i called again and got carolyn on the phone i said, VERY NICELY, "i just wanted to follow-up because obviously you liked my ideas because they ran in the magazine so is there any chance i could freelance for you in the future?" She FLIPPED out and said I was implying i was going to sue them and that "i'd just burned every bridge in the soap industry" a few years later, i was covering a CHARITY event for another magazine and carolyn had me and several other rival mag reporters ejected from the event so SOD had an exclusive. It was insane. She got away with MURDER and the whole industry let her. Good riddance you monster!!!! :)

Hinsey a journalist? I can't imagine anyone really believes that. It's been over 4 years since I worked there and I still cringe at what a hateful, ignorant and twisted person she was and, clearly, still is. Hope an audit of her expense reports are next - maybe that's what's bringing the company down. Pity her next prey - shit like her tends to float.

I agree with every negative thing said about carolyn and lynne, but you've all left the third corner of their sinister triangle out of the mix: STEPHANIE SLOANE! She was right up there with the two of them playing good cop to the hilt. She'd be sweet as pie but only too happy to watch carolyn bust the proverbial kneecaps of a colleague. And talk about conflicts of interest, does anyone remember the INSANELY FAWNING coverage Tom Eplin used to garner in digest while he was dating sloane??? It was ridiculous. I wonder who will win in the fight to stay a 'good cop' now that carolyn's gone and one of them will have to take the 'bad cop' role she vacated. That should be interesting!!!
And to every spineless weasel who has posted something along the lines of "well, carolyn was always nice to me…" let's be real — you obviously SAW/HEARD how she treated others so how could you just turn a blind eye because she wasn't aiming her wrath at you! There were LOTS of people like that in nazi germany who didn't care what happened to the jews so long as it wasn't happening to them. Sorry for the holocaust analogy but it does fit.

YES! YES! I'm so glad someone is calling Stephanie Sloane on her part in this! She, Lynn and Carolyn were like the 'mean girls' only they got away with this crap for far too long!
Sadly, as much as i hate the three of them, carolyn is by far going to be the most lost without her SOD identity. I don't care who she works for next, she'll never again have the soap stars she loves pretending to be her friends. That's over because she has nothing left to offer them.

Carolyn, if you really are reading this, can you please stop smiling and actually take a look at what people have said about you? I think you won't have to delve too deeply into your, um…heart?, to see that you could really benefit from this information. Do yourself a favor and CHANGE! You have truly been an awful person to an astounding number of people. What is wrong with you?

Touche, Megan. How can you respect someone who treats others like dirt? It's the whole bullying syndrome: People side with the bully because they're just glad they're not being picked on.

Well, hopefully, a lot of those victims played a part in CH's dismissal. From what I hear the new HR department called in a lot of employees who couldn't wait to tell the tales so many are telling here. The sad-sack Primedia HR department couldn't accomplish anything because those employees were constantly losing their jobs.

As another former SOD employee…do any of my former colleagues remember Carolyn's original Thorsten Kaye obsession with Randy Mantooth? The sad part of that unrequited love was that she really thought she had a shot with him! She lived in another world — and not a nice one where the corys dwelled but a sick one where big bullies like her had steady employment for decades!

Yeah, she's a dirty bird. She wanted to do a story about me…. setting off the explosives at the Mardi Gras Ball…. when she came to interview me at the nut house, all she did was make wisecracks about me throwing my sister in a well and posing as her for 9 months or murdering a couple people with a crowbar. Then when she brought up Harold the Dog, I had had enough.

I just keep picturing her face sitting poolside at the renaissance hotel in LA a few weeks ago with all her soap 'friends' laughing giddily around her. She'll be playing those scenes in her mind for a long time to come as they won't be happening in real life again! Wonder if any of her soap pals will continue to show up to tend bar at Blondie's now that it won't get them in the mag? Um…NO!

More than Hinsey's expense reports should be audited — word is Sloane's should be too with her all too frequent LA visits to the DAYS set. Sad at her age she's basically a glorified fan! She most certainly isn't talented enough to warrant being flown 3000 miles to cover a show that can be covered by the West Coast staff … she's PATHETIC!!!

Any other former SOD-ers out there who remember Stephanie buying AW's hand-me-down clothes and then bragging "This dress was Donna Love's!" It was SO pathetic I almost felt sorry for her…and then I got to know her. Wow, what a loser. She and Carolyn should start their own magazine. Second thought, they should both just drive off a cliff a la Thelma and Louise.

It couldn't have happened to a bigger bitch! So happy to know that even if Carolyn is reading this from home (whilst she still can pay the electric bill) that she's probably starting to get a glimmer of the idea that her entire reason for being is kaput. No more set visits, no more faux-famous friends, no more unlimited expenses or soap star parties at her bar in NYC. Just a long, long, miserable existence of depression, rage, bitterness and (gulp!) weight gain!!! But stock in McDonald's cause girlfriend is about to hit that chain HARD!

I can tell you that YEARS ago when i was a publicist for a NY-based ABC soap, we literally laughed so hard at carolyn's antics that we'd be practically on the floor. She really DID think Randy Mantooth wanted her! She used to sail in and out of here like she was michael eisner, telling us who we could and could not work with (meaning the other 5 or so soap mags that were in existence a decade ago). Unfortunately, the higher ups always caved in to her and leahy for fear of losing coverage in their rag. Too little too late with this firing, but i guess better than nothing.

Poor hilary b. smith wasted all that time kissing up to CH for nothing! She must be kicking herself. At least K. Zimmer got out of there after a bit of CH's insanity.
WAIT! How about AMC's RPG delivering fruity drinks to queen carolyn that day at the pool???? He's disgusting! I mean, he has gotten fantastic coverage in SOD though so…i guess he got his money's worth and, unlike eplin, didn't have to see one of these ladies naked!
