Unlike New York City mayors, who spend their spare time marrying their second-cousins, unofficially campaigning for the presidency and pissing off every race, gender and voting demographic with their mishandling of the Crown Heights riots, small town mayors are apparently concerned with the more important things in life. Like entering a nationwide popularity contest and competing for the right to host a noisy, Hollywood film premiere.
And while Springfield, Vermont ultimately beats out the competition, rival town Springfield, Illinois was initially unwilling to accept defeat.
Springfield, Vermont will roll out the yellow carpet for the world premiere of "The Simpsons" later this month, beating out 13 other Springfields around the U.S. for the honor. The Vermont video entry included a real-life "Homer" running through the streets of the town, population 9,500.
Thirteen other Springfields competed, and the one from Illinois — which actually has a power plant with a guy who runs it that looks a lot like Montgomery Burns — was so confident it would win that its mayor, Tim Davlin, taunted the others to "eat my shorts" on national TV Monday night. D'oh!
And while we are surprised that, as of press time, the Monty Burns lookalike was (a) still breathing and (b) passed over by the judges, we gotta give it up to Springfield for convincing some overweight baldy to "take one for the team." Meanwhile, when told of the Illinois mayor's premature celebration, the mayor of Springfield, Vermont reportedly responded by, murmuring 'Excellent' in a low, sinister voice while simultaneously tenting his fingertips.

I am one of 200 volunteers who appeared in the winning Springfield Vermont video. After we helped our local Chamber of Commerce win the contest, they turned their backs on us. We should have been the first in town to be receive invitations to the world premiere but the elite in town were awarded our seats instead. And then not even a word of thanks or mention of us in the public ceremony outside the theater! Read more and view our famous winning video on our new website:
