“Do you go to Hawaii to ski?” a Peter Luger’s waiter asked one of Frank Bruni’s guests who inquired about the fish. Well, apparently the beach isn’t enough for Bruni, who demoted Peter Luger to two stars for not having much outside of steak.
So the wine list sucks, the waiters are mean and the other food is bad. Isn’t that the point of Peter Luger? Apparently rude waiters and good steak isn't enough for Bruni:
What Luger serves we can get elsewhere … and while it may not be exactly the same, it’s sometimes close enough.
We can get it in less brutally illuminated dining rooms and pay for it with credit cards, which Luger still doesn’t take. We can get it in more accessible locations.
In short: Luger lost a star because it doesn’t take credit cards and the JMZ is unreliable. But to a guy getting paid to eat, any inconvenience is a big consideration.
If they served TubeSteak, Frankie would have added an additional star.
