At this very moment, there is a bill making its way through the California state legislature that would make it a misdemeanor for law enforcement or court employees to "profit by releasing confidential information gathered in criminal investigations or unauthorized photographs of people in custody."

Assemblywoman Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica) has called the bill an "important [step] to help law enforcement to maintain the integrity of the criminal justice system."
