In news that should make you feel guilty every time you eat a banana, 400 Colombian families have sued Chiquita Banana for $7.86 billion for the "torture and murder" of their loved ones.

In a plea agreement, Chiquita admitted it made “protection payments” to Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC), which was named a terrorist by the United States in 2002.

According to the suit, when a couple refused to sell their banana farm, they were killed by the AUC. Other victims had been forced to sell their bananas only to Chiquita.

And to think, we just bought a Chiquita banana for a quarter. Must good deals always come tainted with blood?
