Just because Connor Paolo plays a gay on Gossip Girl does not mean he is a gay in real life! The actor made a very calculated move to cut short any speculation he might lead an alternative, unemployable lifestyle by smooching his girlfriend April all the way down the red carpet of the Step Up Women's Network's 10th Annual Inspiration Awards.

This supposedly will put to rest rumors that the boys of Gossip Girl are all a bunch of 'mos.

But, uh, Paolo was at the Step Up Women's Network ceremony, for chrissake.

With near certainty, these photos of Gossip Girl actor Chace Crawford – routinely spotted getting close with ladies and/or talking about dating them – will once and for all silence any rumors he is of the homosexual variety. [Photos: OU]

Gossip Girl guest star Michelle Trachtenberg is said to only talk about herself when discussing the show, and when she's quizzed on her other castmates, she changes the subject. [P6] Page Six put a call in to her publicist Jessica Kolstad to see if it's true. Kolstad replied: "I don't know how you live with yourself." Brilliant. [Photo: WENN]

Kids and their blogs

dalton.jpg

If you're tied of this gossip girl, perhaps another real life NYC blog chronicling of inside baseball anecdotes and trite tidbits will pique your interest. It's called Miss ITK (for Miss In The Know), and it's a gossip blog that titillated, and caused heartbreak in, the inner sanctuary of Manhattan's elite offspring: high school. An unidentified teen traversed the hallways of private schools like Dalton, writing in Gossip Girl speak, until he or she was, somehow, brought down. And now the kids who were its most avid readers are saying terrible things about it, like labeling it "immature." Yeah? You're immature!

Sure, The CW's ratings may have lost 28 percent of its 18-34-YO demographic, but it's not not the network is sitting idly by and letting Gossip Girl walk to the plank into obliteration. They already turned off episode streaming on their website, and now they're trying a new gimmick: If you watch the show live, you'll have a chance to win swag!

While discussing Brian Williams' Conan O'Brien appearance yesterday, we managed to gloss over Late Night's second guest: Gossip Girl's Leighton Meister. Watch the clip in case you had any second guesses this girl is a more terrible person in real life than she is on the show.

The CW's ratings are down 28 percent this season! During sweeps, viewership dropped 22 percent! Even with Gossip Girl's buzz, the young people network is at risk of folding, say TV experts who are paid to have an opinion about these sorts of things. If things don't pick up by next season, one of the partners – Time Warner/Warner Bros. or CBS/UPN – is expected to pull out, collapsing the network. [WSJ] So why does a network that had promise – courting the young demographic that advertisers love – face such an uphill battle?

What assholes are going to show up to the Cooper-Hewitt Museum on May 19 to witness the "wedding" of Gossip Girl's Lily van der Woodsen and Bart Bass? The reception will be, of course, at the Palace Hotel, were we might just happen to be enjoying a cocktail and waiting to see if The CW's publicity team have dreamt up anything clever. [Jaunted]

Chace Crawford, the heterosexual actor who plays a heterosexual heartthrob on teen sensation Gossip Girl, yet again, explains an ideal date: "The ideal, I think, when you're starting out, is something low-key, like playing the [Nintendo] Wii, ordering in pizza and then grabbing a beer. … [But come time to step out, the actor says he'd take off] "to a concert in Central Park or an NBA basketball game, if she likes sports." [People] If she likes sports! Oh that's a good one.

Also: "Part of me being single is focusing on my work right now. I've been dating my gym bag for a while now." Because it's so easy to meet ladies in the locker room.

Not only will next season kick off in the Hamptons, but it's going to be super-long! Expect The CW to announce a super-sized, 24-episode Season Two, since the writers strike cut short this season. Says star Leighton Meester: "And, by the way, we aren't shooting in Staten Island like they did on Sex and the City. We're shooting in the real Hamptons." Snap! Hope to see you ladies at Dune! [E!]

Hey? Internet tards and Gossip Girl fanatics? Did you know that the phrase "OMFG," Internet slang for exactly what you think it is, is actually "an expression of surprise" and could mean "Oh My Frickin' Goodness"? That's what The CW marketing vice prez Rick Haskins tries convincing one cynical CNN anchor. Video here (via).

Ratings on all the networks, except NBC, may be dwindling, but the amount of swag fans are picking up on eBay shows good news for all the networks. Or at least some of their shows. On ratings happy NBC, The Office-related items have increased by 4%, while Heroes–related items have decreased by 28%.

But most important, what about Gossip Girl? Despite the crappy merch they offer in their contests, the goods on eBay show promise.

The advertising campaign that's received more free publicity than paid exposure

gossipgirlomfg1.jpg

After 45 Internet years late to the debate, the notorious overreactors at the Parents Television Council, who like to hear the sound of their own voice more than we, are complaining about Gossip Girl's rampant use of explicit sexual imagery and tweenage acronyms. The "sexually suggestive photo showing a teenage boy kissing a girl’s cleavage" in the ads, as well as the use of the phrase "OMFG," is much too much for PTC. The whole campaign is just a "deliberate use of profanity and sexual imagery to exploit and further corrupt young viewers, and has warned its members about the show and the new ad campaign." As for the show itself? It's "the most-watched show among girls 12-17 and glamorizes casual sex and drug use among teens. Storylines have featured a would-be teen rapist, threesome among teens, and teenage girls having sex with adults." WHICH IS WHAT MAKES IT AWESOME.

The CW network spent a fortune promoting the return of Gossip Girl with that OMFG campaign and, unintentionally, with actress Kelly Rutherford's plot spoiler. So how come their latest ploy – a contest giveaway with Us Weekly – is the most obvious low-budget effort ever?

In exchange for your name, address, and email, you have a chance to win a tote bag and mirrored compact courtesy of the CW network. Yes, THAT IS ALL.

gossipgirl22.jpg The Breakfast At Tiffany's nod that kicked off last night's Gossip Girl will hopefully be the last of Jason Schwartz's ploys to ruin a good thing. Or will it? News arrives that Lydia Hearst, now that she's in acting school, is joining the cast for a bit part. First Michelle Trachtenberg, now Hearst. We give it 1.5 seasons before they're booking America's Next Top Model cast offs.

If this New York magazine cover is any indication, Gossip Girl is the second coming of Jesus. Jessica Pressler & Chris Rovzar make the case that this show, despite the lackluster ratings, is a game changer. They even give their reasons in listicle format!

We're going to do one better: We're gonna refute each bullet point. In listicle format!

The success of Gossip Girl's "OMFG" campaign and other buzz-making efforts have proven too successful, driving so much traffic to The CW's website that hundreds of thousands of people have been watching free streams of the show … WHICH WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF ALL THIS.

Now the network everybody talked about behind its back is shutting down the web streams over fears they're cannabilizing the show's television audience. And since the target demographic of young people are so Internet savvy, The CW thinks they're becoming too lazy to bother catching the show in primetime, where ad dollars are much more grand, and instead growing accustomed to catching the show on the Information Superhighway, which nobody has figured out how to monetize.
