Animal Planet will premiering it's newest miniseries tonight, based on the chronicles of Grizzly Man star Timothy Treadwell, the adult-child who befriended the bears and then got himself eaten by them. Werner Herzog made his 2005 film about Treadwell, using extensive personal footage to develop a chilling narrative of a man's obsession with one of nature's most dangerous predators.

Grizzly Man Diaries, which markets itself as a sort of prequel to the Herzog films, will include eight more hours of footage where Timothy talks in that creepy, sing-song voice to the bears he is trying to befriend up in Alaska. It seems a rather strange time to release to tapes, since Grizzly Man was a sort of blip on the cultural radar that's since been regulated to a piece of the Herzog oeuvre. But hey, Animal Planet knows that the Treadwell story pulled some heartstrings, and the producers from the movie had some footage left over and a desire for more money so…..voila! The NYT calls the series "moderately compelling," to give you an idea of what you're in for.
