Hockey player/clothes horse Sean Avery got suspended from the NHL after making disparaging comments about his ex-girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert, and another player. The funny thing? The dude sought out cameras to catch his bashing on tape, which is the equivalent of O.J. calling up The National Enquirer and telling them to meet him at Nicole's house.

Avery approached a group of reporters, asked if a camera was present, then said he wanted to say one thing: "I'm really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada," he said. "I just wanted to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. But, enjoy the game tonight."

Since when do they suspend you from talking smack during a hockey game? Well, at least he didn't put his rant on Craigslist…then the repercussions might have been a little worse.

Also: He's only a pretend asshole
"People ask me if I'm gay … 'cause I work at Vogue. All of a sudden you turn into a gay man because you like clothes … Open up a magazine and see my track record. I don't think I'm that gay."

Sean Avery is the cutest asshole clotheshorse to ever hit the ice. He's kind of a jerk sometimes, but usually that's when he's body checking an opponent into the glass. Otherwise, he's the perfect gentleman, which explains why he got along so well with Anna Wintour, who he reached out to when he snagged his summer internship at Vogue.

But Avery has left us city types, departing the New York Rangers for the Dallas Stars, which means soon he won't even be a blip on our radar. But then he says some pretty awesome things during interviews — "I do get my underwear ironed" — and we're hard again.

Two more clips below from Avery's interview with CBC's The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos.

Secret Identity not such a secret

Sean Avery skated (ugh!) his way into your fantasies playing for the New York Rangers, but you'd never know it from all the summer buzz. Avery "begged" Anna Wintour an internship at her body dysmorphic disorder magazine and the queen relented, as she needed to learn some pro tips on gracefully bodychecking underlings while making impromptu exits.

Now that time has run out on Avery's NY experience, he is cramming in all the Fashion Week activities he can before he moves to Texas to join the Dallas Stars, earn $15.5 million over four years, and never, ever talk about his experience in men's fashion again. Until the press junket for that New Line movie.

So what did his summer as a clothes horse teach him? How to talk like a snotty New Yorker, natch:

Some sort of congratulations is in order for Sean Avery, the professional hockey player so obsessed with clothing he agreed to endure a summer making photocopies for Anna Wintour. (Actually, he asked her.) Somehow, in all the excitement about July's Nicole Kidman cover, we didn't realize that Avery had already wrapped up his internship at Vogue. So now that he's done at the magazine — though he hopes he'll be asked back next year — what does Avery plan on doing? Hitting the beach, "bringing the European flavor back to America, and I'm rocking a straight Speedo all summer." God bless you Vogue.

Twenty-eight-year-old Sean Avery, the New York Rangers hockey player who knows at least eight different ways to fold a pocket square, began his Vogue internship on Monday, where he'll pick up a cool $5,000 for his work this summer. "Observers say he's involved in all sections of the magazine, including features and accessories, and attends edit meetings." [WWD] Last month, Avery managed to lacerate his spleen during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, though he played through it. Teammates thought he had suffered cardiac arrest when reports surfaced that he wasn't breathing when he arrived at the hospital. So you can tell he's quite the dramatic type, so he should fit in quite nicely.

seanavery1.jpg If it weren't for his proclivity to sleep with women, guys like hockey player Sean Avery might go by the label "gay." Yep, the man loves clothes, and we love stereotypes. Though he's "the most hated man in hockey," he was likable enough for Anna Wintour, who agreed to hire him as a Vogue intern after he wrote in with the request. Though he's earning $2 million with the New York Rangers, this summer he'll be schlepping couture from messengers to the Vogue offices, perhaps even the Men's Vogue offices, though that won't do much for his tendency to style girlfriends.

The New York Rangers and owner Madison Square Garden are facing a lavender rebellion. Gay fans, such as Kevin Jennings, are growing more vocal in their fight against homophobic epithets hurled during home games. "[Some] fans recalled that the crowd booed when the name of the New York City Gay Hockey Association, a recreational league, flashed briefly across the jumbo screen."
