Sometimes I just have to say, “what the fuck?” and the royal we doesn’t work as well. These are my thoughts—raronauer

Cord Jefferson over at Mollygood thinks I am a jerk for not paying for the new Radiohead album.

This from a man who once said Victoria Beckham’s forehead looked like an everything bagel.

I might be a jerk, but at least I'm not an idiot. Check out Cord's justification for dropping ten bucks on a free album.

Back in high school, there were few Radiohead fans bigger than me. As a precocious teen living in the suburbs, driving around aimlessly listening to OK Computer was my standard Sunday afternoon. The highlight of my senior year was seeing Radiohead live.

So I was pretty excited when the new Radiohead album, In Rainbows, came out yesterday at a pay what you want cost. And what did I pay for the new album from the band that “changed my life” when I was 16? Nothing.

I wasn’t an economics major, but when someone offers me the choice of paying for something or getting it for free, I usually choose free. And while I get that the pay-what-you-want model still encourages people to pay for the album, I’ve dealt with enough Jewish grandparents to know when I’m being fooled.

Jossip Editors 'Celebrate' By Figuring Out What They Need To Work On By This Time Next Year

todo-listpad-sm.JPG

Today, Jossip celebrates its fourth wonderful year of existence. In honor of this momentous occasion, each editor has come up with a list of goals/achievements he/she hopes to have accomplished by the time Jossip turns five. Next up: raronauer

Wow, Debbie. Interviewing Hill Clint? I’m impressed. My goals are mostly about doing less work. Well, you know, humble goals for a humble woman.

By this time next year, I will have….

1. Figured out a way to smoke breaks without having to smoke.

2. Tricked David into giving me monthly three-day weekends.

3. Written less frequently and with more accuracy about the Times most e-mailed list.

4. Found an intern to do Wednesday Reads.

Perhaps because the blog industry started as a forum for Midwesterners to write eulogies to their cats, people are still having trouble taking blogs seriously. Last time I saw my extended family, the follow-up question to the news that I was working for a blog was, “and you get paid for that?”

Yes, I don’t wake up at 7 for kicks.

A lot has changed about the blogging industry. Sure, there are still a lot of cat bloggers, but there are also talented and engaged journalists out there who prefer to do their reporting in their pajamas.

Like my fellow scribes, I love barbeque. Unless you work for PETA, what's not to like about well-seasoned meat and cream infused sides? But one thing I won't stand for is Dallas BBQ. The only way to express my true hatred is through an ancient form of Japanese poetry:

Texas-sized drinks, sure
But really, why go to New
Jersey in New York?

For all the talk about declining subscription rates, it turns out the newspapers don’t really care that much. Papers are selling 10 percent fewer copies than they were in 2000. But many papers are cutting back on ventures that would help them get subscriptions anyway, the Times reports today.

Raising subscription rates does not appease advertisers, and the cost of getting a new subscriber through cold calling and other methods is significant. So many newspapers have just resigned themselves to a lower circulation, hoping that a bigger Web presence will make up the difference.

Listen, I like MTV. And not just the smart person dumb shows, like The Hills and True Life. I watch, and enjoy, the Real World Challenges.

I don't mind the channel’s shift away from videos either. (Thanks YouTube!) While all those documentaries about AIDS in the early 90s definitely scared me straight, voyeuristic reality TV is so much more entertaining. Besides, the kids today seem to be too busy getting text message updates about their MySpace page to know what they’re missing.
