The Band of Bands That Has Rejected McCain
Following Springsteen's Lead

For the third time this election season, a band has asked the Republican party to not use one of its songs to introduce the party's presidential and vice-presidential nominees, John McCain and Sarah Palin. Much like Bruce Springsteen, who in 1984 asked Ronald Reagan to stop using "Born in the USA" on his reelection campaign trail, the artists say their politics don't jibe with those of the GOP candidates.

After the jump, the artists and the songs over which they've asserted control.

John Mellencamp kicked off the dissing back in February, when he told the McCain campaign to stop using his songs "Our Country" and "Little Pink Houses" at its rallies. We imagine what McCain's folks found especially hurtful is that "Our Country" was used for quite some time by Chevrolet, meaning Mellencamp doesn't have a problem selling out, he has a problem selling out to McCain.

Funny that the "right" despises the "crazy lefty
liberals" that are associated with Hollywood and all the celebrities and musicians that go along with it, yet they won't hesitate to use their works to further their cause. Hypocrites.

Who do they think listens to their over the hill radio stations and attends their over priced nostalgia concerts?
It's easy to take the money and then complain about the source after you spend it. Typical hollyjerk hypocrite.

Left Perspective:
+ When someone on the political right says something snarky it's "hate speech."
+ When someone on the political left says something snarky it's "speaking truth to power."

Right Perspective:
+ When someone on the political left says something snarky it's "lies" or "moonbattery."
+ When someone on the political right says something snarky it's "speaking the truth."

You partisans are making my head ache. Please stop.

As for the music: I expect an artist's control of his work's use depends upon the licensing terms that he arranges in advance with the licensing agent. Unless the RNC was really so dumb as to not license its use of "Running on Empty", I interpret Browne's suit as his attempt to control use of his work beyond that which the licensing terms allowed.

Gee, Mom, here's something for you to think about as well…

Funny that the artists on the "left" that are associated with Hollywood and all the celebrities and musicians that go along with it SAY they are for free speech…that they and their work and the ideals expressed within represent the hopes and dreams of ALL Americans…but come election time they suddenly say "Oh, my movie/song/whatever didn't include you UNLESS you subscribe to my personal political beliefs. Oh, but once the election is over…and ideally my guy won…THEN we're back to my movies/songs/whatever being about all of us because I want to sucker you right back in. More importantly, I want my royalties and whatever other money I can get out of you to remain rich and famous."

I'm sorry what was that word you used?
Yeah, you're right — Hypocrites all.

"Boycott" "enlightened" musicians? What on earth? Huh? When you write a song and have it copyrighted, legally, that song is your property, and its use is legally regulated. Thus, if a politician you disagree with or don't like–and everyone has the right to disagree or dislike a politician in the United States of America–then you have the right to properly ask that politician not to use your song. That's called copyright law. It has literally nothing–zero–to do with being "englightened," or whatever. It is your right as a copyright holder, as an artist, as a musician, and as a songwriter. It's also called simple common sense.

gee, big dumb ape is such an apt name for you.

this isn't a "free speech" issue, it's a copyright issue.

you can't use someone's song unless you have their permission.

No. 10 Laura says:

I'm alarmed that several people on this page, who clearly are hip enough to use the internet and, at least, find Jossip, do not understand that there are laws against stealing people's sh*t, even if you are running for president.

Traditionally, in America, you have to wait until you ARE the president to do that sort of crap.
