The Contrarian Vs. Spinspotter: Which Reveals Bias Better?
or better bias?

A couple weeks ago, we reviewed Spinspotter, an ostensibly useful widget for determining whether or not an article you're reading contains any sort of media bias. Except it is either really difficult to figure out or completely useless, since Huffington Post and Drudge Report, arguably to of the most spinniest of spin journals, contain no spin, according to Spinspotter.

Whatever. Now there is a second option for those of you looking to pepper the comment sections of various blogs with "reports" of bias in journalism.

Say hello to The Contrarian:

The Contrarian is a tool that brings into focus disparate facts and views in today's media narrative. Taking content entirely from published articles and photos, The Contrarian seeks to sharpen the edges of the hazy world view presented by internet media. The product of this effort seeks not to discredit any particular source, but to encourage users to seek out other sources for information.

Already, The Contrarian is a lot less annoying than Spinspotter, since it doesn't install an application on your browser that you never plan on using. Instead, Contrarian compares different articles takes on the same event, highlighting the difference in wording as evidence of possible bias on the part of reporter. See for instance the difference between this statement:

The town hall setting is expected to play to McCain's strengths. In fact, he lobbied Obama over the summer to debate him in a series of town hall meetings, but the Democratic candidate declined. Now McCain is getting his shot, and it couldn't come at a better time."

and this one:

Still, it may not be easy: This debate will be in a town-hall setting and the candidates will be taking questions from voters, a format that historically has made it difficult to mount the kind of attacks Mr. McCain is looking to make.

First one is from Fox News, the second from The New York Times. Hmm…this might actually be a useful and nonpartisan program, if such a thing exists. Feel free to fact check all our political articles here.
