Maybe it's because a candy like Mars Inc.'s Snickers is so easily associated with "fudge packing" that the chocolate bar's ad agencies feel the need to release one homophobic ad after another.
A 2007 Super Bowl ad showed two auto mechanics accidentally kissing while gobbling down the same Snickers bar; they pulled away from each other, repulsed. That ad, from TBWA New York, had even worse scenarios in the online version, including one of the mechanics attacking the other with a wrench.
Now, Snicker's newest ad, from AMV BBDO London, in all its homophobic glory. The spot, shown here, features Mr. T from A-Team attacking what can only be described as a power-walking, butt-wiggling queen; Mr. T. shoots Snickers bars at him from a giant truck-mounted Gatling gun to get his sissy ass running. Walking, of course, is too girly for a manly man. "You a disgrace to the man race!" shouts Mr. T.
And all this follows BBDO Detroit's Dodge Caliber ad, where a Tinkerbell-esque pixie was on hand to illustrate what's wrong with buying anything but a macho car.
Now, what do all three of these agencies have in common? They're all owned by Omnicom. And CEO John Wren is getting a lashing.
In an open letter to Wren, AdAge columnist and NPR's On The Media co-host Bob Garfield asks the executive, "How could you be so insensitive, how could you be so shallow, and how could you be so mean? This letter is to you, but it is equally to your colleagues throughout the industry. Are you so bereft, of ideas and simple humanity, that you must be reduced to stereotyping and bullying? That you must identify an 'other' to ridicule, or worse? That you must build a brand on the backs of people who have harmed no one save for challenging a high-school locker-room standard of masculinity? Stop the dehumanizing stereotypes. Stop the jokey violence. There is no place in advertising for cruelty. Pull the campaign. Do it now. Then tell your agencies how to behave. Or else."
Garfield is absolutely right. Wren owes the consuming public a much heathier approach to getting them to subscribe to his clients' brands. But Wren's agencies aren't the only ones responsible here. Snickers' parent company Mars, and Dodge owner Chrysler, are the ones OK-ing these spots for air. Not just the copywriters at the agencies get the blame here, but the execs at these two huge firms are the ones putting the homophobic spots in front of millions of Americans, all in exchange for a cheap punchline.
For now, we're going to switch to Nestle's 100 Grand, and Ford's Lincoln MKZ. You know, if we ate sugar or drove American cars.

I can't help but argue that the assumption that the runner is in fact homosexual not only defines the seemingly one-sided argument represented here, but also reinforces a disgusting stereotype which would only fit to serve validation for what you claim to be so against.
If anything, I would think arguing that attacking anybody is wrong and an irresponsible way to approach such a wide audience.
Without any blind assumption, the ad (to me) just speaks to show how stupid the not-so-secluded branch of masculinity this country's come to reward (from school jocks to our national president) really is in terms of accepting anything beyond themselves.
I laugh at the stupidity portrayed and shed a tear for those who aren't able to.
Well, digitalordead, I guess your masculine self was never kicked for being a little femme. As for me, a bunch of fully-grown rednecks in a pickup truck tried to run me over in a Hardee's parking lot in middle Georgia when I was TWELVE years old, yelling.
This ad really hit a little too close to home.
But, thanks for shedding a tear for my inability to laugh at my own previous bashing. Preciate it, bro.
Outrageous!! I am straight but I find this totally unacceptable. Shows just how much prejudice there is in this country be it to gays, people of color or women. Very sad.
It is incredible to believe that these advertising agencies spend countless hours coming up with ideas and get paid a lot for it and this offensive crap is the best they could do.
What is wrong with this ad? Its pure fantasy. A black man with a mohawk just drove a truck through a home and he's operating a gatling gun which fires candy bars? Its removed from reality. People need to relax and separate their social paranoia from their entertainment.
