The long winded history of Graydon Carter and Jean-Georges Vongerichten

Graydon Carter

Much has been said about Graydon Carter's infamous derailing of 66, Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Chinese eatery that didn't give the Vanity Fair editor special table treatment back in 2003. So how'd GC react? By sending foodie fireball A.A. Gill to visit and reveal that 66's dumplings tasted like "fishy liver-filled condoms" in a VF review. Tactful, yes.

Jumping ahead, this week's New York magazine points out that Alan Katz & Co. (that is, VF's publishing staff) will be ringing in the holidays at Perry Street — a J-G V restaurant. A corporate talking head wasn't sure if Graydon would be attending, but blogger (and, less importantly, author) PX This points out that back in '04, Graydon much enjoyed himself at Spice Market, yet another J-G V establishment.

probably nobody remembers but way back in like the spring/summer of 2004 [it's gone now. personal archives-- sorry!] i told the story of how graydon-carter made a reservation at SpiceMarket right when it first opened. and so all the jeangeorgian bigwigs were all in a tizz because they weren't sure whether graydon-carter was still mad at them for the crappy table he got at 66, which caused him to send the "hitman."
yah so. according to my peeps still serving time in cellblockHELL, that very day over a year ago when graydon-carter was due to arrive for his dinner at SpiceMarket, everybody was all a frazzled spastic mess trying to anticipate whether the table they had chosen for graydon-carter would be satisfactory enough for the power-table-hungry fucking freak.

well evidently it was. because according to eyewitnesses, graydon-carter left SpiceMarket happy as a clam that night and even paused on his way out to assure JG&Co that he would "make it up to [them]."

A five-figure evening expensed to Si Newhouse sounds like the perfect make good. Or a signed editor's letter photo, which we'd much prefer.
