God bless David Remnick. Were it not for his New Yorker cover this week, and his insistence that its depiction — of Barack Obama as a radical Muslim giving wifey Michelle a good old fashioned fist bump while, for extra effect, an American flag burns beneath the mantle, where Osama bin Laden watches over — the cable news talking heads might have to devote another five days of punditry to the economy, or bother touching on the near collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But now Chris Matthews, Bill O'Reilly, and Lou Dobbs can wrap their heads around this glaring symbol of ANTI-AMERICANISM!
And while we all debate over whether this cover is a depiction of the Obama mythology and scare tactics perpetrated by the right wing — Barack is an Islamic radical! Michelle hates America! — we're nearly certain zero attention will be paid to the footwear that illustrator Barry Blitt chose to deck the couple out in. Michelle dons a pair of military boots to match her army fatigues, and Barack sports the sandals any Muslim in traditional garb would be wearing. And they're both stamping upon the eagle that represents all that is free and good and whole of this country. Burn them at the stake!
In the end, the New Yorker's cover will do, let's guesstimate, exactly zero to further the debate about Obama the man, right-wing smear tactics, or America's sentiments toward the presidential candidate. Instead, the liberal magazine's intentions will have the reverse effect: Give ammo to the conservative machine looking for any way possible to paint Obama exactly as Remnick did this week.

Remember the Danish cartoons depicting Muhammad? Both Obamma and McCain had a great opportunity to show the rest of the world that we believe in and treasure the free press in America. Both failed to do so. And, look at all the people upset. Look at all the people just as upset and crazy as after the Danish cartoon situation. This is a freedom of the press and freedom of speech issue. It doesn't matter if I or anyone else appreciates the satire or disagrees with the NewYorker for publishing this cover. The fact of the matter is, we should be proud to live where it can be published and where the press can distribute ideas. Most of the articles and many responses to them I've read indicate that a lot of people have forgotten the most basic and best reason to love America. We can exchange ideas and information freely. We are free to agree or disagree with one another. We can even publish a cartoon if we want.

The media continue the scare campaign tactics. The Bush administration has destroyed the economy with unnecessary wars, billions of dollars that somehow banished and nobody is asking where they went, gas prices out of control. The rich has gotten richer while the middle class for the most part disappeared. We have oilmen and defense contractors getting richer and richer, The only worker that feels financially safe is your average wealthy CEO. His "you guys drive your company into the ground I'll bail you out" plan works fine. The last eight years his main worry has been Iraqi Israeli and afghan borders. America's borders? Who cares!
There is nothing positive they can use to run their presidential campaign in 2008,.
So they figure that by portraying Obama as a terrorist Muslim and blaming the helpless undocumented workers for everything that has gone wrong. They can now throw a smoke screen and cowardly hide behind the American flag and the patriotic feelings it brings out in all of us. It is not right.
