Magazine Deathwatch '08 just got a little more real, y'all. It was only several weeks ago that Hearst shut down CosmoGIRL! for good, and only a couple days ago that there were a number of unidentified layoffs coming to the company.
Well, now we have confirmation on the latest casualty of the magazine wars: Oprah's O spin-off, O at Home has just folded.
Sarah Gray Miller, the editor of O at Home, has been named the new editor of Country Living. The rest of the staff? Well, hopefully they will be placed better than their colleagues at CosmoGIRL! who were promised a reassignment at Seventeen.
Otherwise: this spells a disturbing new track the downturn has taken. Before we assumed the home and living magazines were safe from shuttering, because they appealed to the Midwestern Hallmark demographic. To find out that even Oprah can't float a title these days is just a wake-up call for anybody who still thought things were not going to get worse before they got better.
