The Report Card That Katie Couric Will Pay More Attention to Than Her Kids'

Because asshats like us aren't enough to keep tabs on media follies, the Project for Excellence in Journalism (financed, naturally, by Pew) is launching a weekly report card for a number of newspapers, TV broadcasts, and yes, even blogs. Something about gauging what media outlets view as important news and analyzing just how they report it. While one can hope for a Drudge-like siren going off for every instance of bias they can pinpoint, what you're more likely to receive is a wordy post on Journalism.org, perhaps accompanied by some pie charts and Venn diagrams.

Each Tuesday, PEJ will issue a report on its website (journalism.org.) about the media agenda — what was covered and what wasn't. It will include an index of the top stories each week and a narrative analyzing the twists and turns of the coverage. The report also will include a breakdown of the differences among the media sectors. [...]

The study is intended to help consumers see how different media play top stories of the day and could help media outlets better gauge the so-called broccoli-vs.-Twinkie debate, "the line between what they think the public needs to know and what they want to know," PEJ director Tom Rosenstiel says.

And then they can add all those Digg, Technorati, and Newsvine social bookmarking features for one big meta orgy discussing the same crap we rip through everyday. All that said, we can't wait for the debut of the report. So we can rip through it.
