The variety acts of yesteryear have gone the way of Carroll Burnett and Ed Sullivan's careers. The two comedians, who in pre-TiVo time were able to entertain audiences with skits and musical numbers, are now relics of a bygone time of star power, speaking to a nearly vanished ability to carry an entire show on personality alone. Let's see Ryan Seacrest keep American Idol going without the idols. Nowadays, the closest thing we got is Saturday Night Live, but it's less a variety show than a short form comedy troupe.
Two new shows hope to fill the gap in larger-than-life hosts and bring back the variety show to primetime: an upcoming Osbourne family program (hey what's up 2003??), and a one hour pre-Thanksgiving special starring Rosie O'Donnell.
Let's play a little game called Good Idea/Bad Idea:
• Good Idea: Bringing back the variety show: Short form skits, music, and flashy costumes should appeal to the Ritalin-addled generation.
• Bad Idea: Having the show hosted by celebrities that young people no longer cared about. Sonny & Cher worked in their heyday because they represented a loving grooviness that attracted a cult following. Rosie O'Donnell only attracts mom-types looking for free Koosh balls.
• Good Idea: Putting a whole family in to host a show and allowing the disperate personalities to play off each other, like The Jacksons!
• Bad Idea: Having your show hosted by this family.

Honestly, for most people on Earth: Why on earth would anyone want to watch some variety program hosted by Rosie O'Donnell? She has literally ruined everything she has come into contact with: She ruined, and destroyed the great McCall's magazine; she ruined at least one Broadway play, which was a huge flop and a complete disaster; she totally ruined The View, driving viewers away in droves; and she has ruined other films and television projects that she has participated in. She is obnoxious, rude, loud and completely un-entertaining. She is the wrong person to host a variety show, and no television network should pick this up. It will be a disaster.

I'm glad to see Rosie is able to pull herself away from taking a leak all over the graves of the 9-11 victems for a few minutes. Maybe she can have Kim Jong Il on and he can pitch his new script idea.
