The Weinstein Bros. Tell-All Book That May Never Be
Hit Jobs

An "explosive" Harvey and Bob Weinstein book might one day hit bookstore shelves, but don't expect its arrival anytime soon. That's because the still-anonymous author likely doesn't even have an agent, like alone a book deal, based on the report Page Six filed today — sourced by the author himself.

The scribe, a former Weinstein employee using the pseudonym "The Final Nail," wrote Page Six insisting "our database of Miramax files is huge" and that there was no nondisclosure agreement even signed, and even included a phone call recording, from 1996, between Harvey and Joe Roth, then president of Walt Disney Studios, where they're caught complaining about Michael Ovitz's $138 million severance package from Disney.

All potentially scandalous stuff — but none of that means a book will ever get printed.

It feels like reports of coming bombshell tell-all books arrive every month or so. Except when you're aiming to spill on the highest of powers in the media industry, your project is already at a disadvantage.

When Oprah's own father, Vernon, announced he was writing a tell-all, his project suddenly got "put on hold." And the Kitty Kelley explosive book about the talk show queen announced in 2006? Nary a peep since.

When it comes to the Weinsteins, the same rules apply: Any publisher who actually puts out a book about them, or for that matter even has a meeting with the literary agent representing the book, and dares cross them will forever be on their shitlist, which means no playing nice with book-to-movie deals, endless planted hit job items in the gossip columns, and closed door trashing that could imperil any deals the publisher's parent company might be working on.

Then again, some might argue the Weinstein brothers, now running their own shop at The Weinstein Company, are much less powerful than they once were when they were running Miramax with Disney's dollars, overseeing the flagship distribution company, a home video unit, a book division, and a television operation. At TWC, they have a hoard of investors to answer to, and cash is not the endless commodity it once was. Harvey will never lose his reputation as a bloviating asshole, and his stature as a figurehead for revenge still stands, but his power to make good on his threats may have diminished.

So if this tell-all gets off the ground, fantastic for its author! But it's equally plausible this will be the first, and last, time we hear about it.
