Nate Silver, the attractive numbers-cruncher who made a splash this year by applying his baseball stats predictions to the outcome of the election, is getting a book deal with Penguin to the tune of $700k. Which is no small amount, but remember this kid is a bona fide genius, without all the annoying Asperger's characteristics that seem to accompany such mathematical dexterity.

On the other hand? Sarah Palin is in talks to ink a book, hopefully with a lot of copy editors on her side, to a sum that's been estimated around $7 million.

So in this culture of economic frugality, it's nice to know that stupidity and incompetence is still rewarded a hundred-fold over any modicum of actual talent.
