Tim Russert Has Had It With "Activist" Keith Olbermann

We've spent much space chronicling the unrest inside the walls of 30 Rock, from the arrival of NBC News correspondent at David Gregory at MSNBC to tension between Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann. Now comes word that Tim Russert, the well-respected and well-liked poobah of NBC, has officially joined the ranks of the perturbed. Well, he already did that when he had to scold Gregory about mouthing off to a waitress, but now his ire is aimed at "activist" Keith Olbermann.

Reports TVNewser:

"Every Tuesday night Keith is up there as the face of NBC News. That's a problem," says our source. "[Tim] Russert is upset about it. Russert has spent 20 years building credibility. All of a sudden he's taking questions from Keith Olbermann, the Daily Kos blogger?"

The insider says Olbermann's election night partner has reservations as well: "Chris Matthews is quite pissed about it. He knows a lot about politics and he takes it seriously. He's so close to it that he's not that political. He's not an activist — Keith's an activist. That's the difference."

Asked for a response, an MSNBC spokesperson tells TVNewser, "Your source is ill-informed and the assertions are laughable."

With the primaries finished, the focus moves to the general election. "What's it going to be like in the general election now that everyone knows we're the in-house network of Barack Obama?" asked our insider.

"There's a huge difference between rooting for one side in a Democratic primary, and another one to take sides in a general election and go out and openly root for a candidate. You can't do that," said the insider. "You think Russert is going to put up with that? Election night coverage in November with Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann?

Too bad, then, that Olbermann's ratings are what's driving MSNBC primetime, and everyone from Phil Griffin to Jeff Zucker knows it. Which is why there's slim chance of them doing much to reign him in. Because if they do, they might as well say g'bye to him:

"The key is his willingness to quit," says our source about Olbermann. "And he means it. He has convinced management of that. They are convinced that he will walk. He behaves like a man who has nothing left to lose. He is not central to MSNBC, he is the center of the MSNBC ratings strategy. We hang the entire schedule on him."

Olbermann pulled the same shit at ESPN. They didn't renew his contract.

Olbermannis the only one who has had the balls to lie it all on the table which is more than what can be said for Russert, Matthews who plays patsy not hardball.

naw…Keith baby is definitely getting to be a harpy lately . . .he has become annoyingly shrill in his 'prime-time' slot;too bad - he used to be so informatively, amuselingly, entertaining - might be time to start discreet negotiations again with Rosie lol . . ….

I watched Russert bash Hillary for all these months on the Today show while snaggle toothed Meredith and the Gekko, Matt Lauer grinned like fools. He's getting what he deserves.

Really, I've gone from an Olbermann fan to screaming "TURN THE FUCKING CHANNEL" - I think he has had a series of strokes that have made him go off the deep end……

Now that the primary season is over, he is free to lick Obama's balls all the way to Election Day…..
