Though Brian Williams filled in the moderator's chair on Meet The Press today, Mr. Tom Brokaw will take over through the election as we suspected. It might've been easy to think Williams was actually quite apt for the gig: He followed Russert's traditional line of questioning that brought up past statements and offered politicos the chance to contradict themselves or reaffirm their past; Joe Biden was today's example, asked about the vice presidency. (He had said before that under no circumstances would he want to be VP. He said that again today. Then he qualified that statement by saying he doesn't want to be VP because Barack Obama just wouldn't ask him — if if Obama did ask, he'd have no choice but to say yes.)
But that's not what Jeff Zucker and Steve Capus had in mind. The official announcement came this morning, and Williams telling viewers at the end of today's broadcast, with 30 Rock revealing Brokaw will take over MTP beginning next Sunday and last through the November election.
Says Brokaw in the statement: "I've been appearing on Meet the Press since the days of Watergate when it was moderated by Lawrence E. Spivak right through the distinguished tenure of my great friend, Tim Russert, so I feel right at home. Tim made Meet the Press the center of the universe for informative and lively discussions of public affairs, particularly the exciting 2008 campaign for president, and I intend to continue that commitment to our viewers."
According to Capus' remarks in the statement, "To have someone of Tom's stature step up and dedicate himself to ensuring its ongoing success is not only a testament to his loyalty to Tim, but his enduring commitment to NBC News and our viewers." To be sure, Tom did step up, but as our NBC News sources have been telling us in the days since Russert's death, it's been Zucker and Capus who have been very eagerly courting Brokaw, though he wasn't exactly a hard sell. One high-level source also says the arrangement was "finalized" at the end of last week; Williams chaired this week's show, as planned, having already prepared intensely for it.

Brokaw is the most logical and predictable choice til the election. Chuck Todd, though, would be a good permanent replacement. He has the same Russert demeaner.
Nancy Grace would be a good selection if the network wanted to change to lies, insinuations, and violations of the Law by the host.
Tom Brokaw is classier than Brian Williams. He doesn't show his own personal bias like Brian Williams. I hope he continues to demonstrate his class, elegance and dignity on "Meet the Press" as he has throughout his career…
