Without Barack Obama, the tabloids basically have nothing to go on these days. Britney Spears is cleaning up her act. Nicole Richie sometimes parties late, but mostly stays hidden with her mommyhood. And there's the scraps: Mary-Kate Olsen heading to rehab? Oooh, breaking! Which is why, just sometimes, the tabloids have to rely on their own reporters to drum up scandal.
Like the way Us Weekly did with Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo.
An enterprising Us reporter, either under direction from Janice Min or looking for a handsome way to boost her profile, supposedly "wrote a letter" (not an email) to Tony Romo's father to see if there was a way to bait the Romo family into tearing apart the Simpson clan. Reports Roger Friedman:
I???ve seen the letter. It???s a hoot.
The reporter, whose name I will leave out of this, wrote to Mr. Romo: "I think it???s important for you to be aware ??? and maybe you already are ??? of how much Jessica Simpson???s side is controlling the media right now. ??? I think it???s important for the public to hear the other side of the truth, and undoubtedly there???s nobody who can provide that information better than you, Tony???s father. Us Weekly would be honored to provide an outlet for you to share your account of the situation. We could speak on or off the record ??? it???s completely up to you."
Account of what situation? That was my first question. That they???re dating? "Other side of the truth?" Is this really how the tabs operate? What truth? Again, that they???re dating?
Luckily, Mr. Romo didn???t take the bait. Jessica is still dating Tony. But the Us Weekly letter could make for a great country song.
Listen, I don???t think the letter is that scandalous. I think denying that there hasn???t been on again off again rumors about Romo and Simpson???s perhaps on again off again relationship is ridiculous and there certainly has been rumors that Simpson???s dad has played a part in that. So come on. We all read this stuff (if you are reading jossip, you can???t really say you are abstaining for celebrity journalism), so I am not sure that any of us are in any position to question this reporter and her methods. Besides, would any of us think Jessica Simpson at all relevant if it weren???t for these magazines? She knows the game, and by leaking this letter, she is just trying to add flames to her own fire. ??? Real Girls Eat Meat??? anyone? I understand celebrities want to be left alone and some absolutely should be left alone, ones who obviously try to avoid the spot light, but for those who pander to it, and then want to limit the coverage that they in some ways are trying to promote, is kind of ridiculous. If they were really upset, shouldn???t they just have written a discrete letter to US Weekly and called it a day?
You're missing the point. Us Weekly is trying to start something while their editor is out there pretending to be a real journalist. This magazine is scum and they should be called out for their actions. Sure Jessica could have pretended it away but what good does that do? The more people know how underhanded Us and their editor is the better.
