Us Weekly's Own Fake News
Is the tabloid making up stories of its own? PLUS: Kitson back in Us' good graces?

Us Weekly's blues won't be ending anytime soon. While Star rages back against Us – and Us continues digging its own hole with its "Fake News" feature – the magazine is also raking its own coals in other new and exciting ways.

Take, for instance, this week's Hot Stuff section, where a full-page engagement story on The Hills' Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt includes an inset shot of what's supposedly the ring she's wearing. "Montag’s ring (she wore it May 24) is studded with diamond chips," reads the caption.

Except Spencer says it's a farce. "US has a picture of the wrong ring," he tells a tattler. "That’s not the engagement ring I bought Heidi. No one has a picture of the ring yet.” Meanwhile, Katie Ciarlo, an employee at Ice Accessories where Spencer bought the ring, also says Us has it wrong: "The picture US Weekly printed showed was the wrong ring. That is not the ring that Spencer bought Heidi."

What was that about other tabloids printing "Fake News?"

But wait, there's more.

In Us Weekly's on-going feud with Kitson, the celebrity retailer in LA seems to have won. The spat – which had to do with Us agreeing not to hurt the Kitson business, then Us removing all Kitson mentions in the magazine, and Kitson suing Us for hurting its business – has wound up with numerous Kitson mentions in the tabloid. There's April 16's item (p. 34) with Heidi Klum shopping at Kitson; and May 14's plug of shopkitson.com for Simple Toe peeka flip flops (p. 95).

And then there's this week's issue (p. 69) where Kitson's Baby Skull star slip-ons are featured. (Click the image for a larger version.) Have fences mended?

Elsewhere, an devoted UsMagazine.com watcher informs us that the tabloid's Celebrity News blog changed its look this week. Well, its masthead, at least. It used to read "edited by Noelle Hancock." It now reads "with Noelle Hancock." Is online director Ken Baker demoting the magazine's best web asset?

No. 2 US Weekly made up news on Heidi Montag's ring says:

[...] Jossip points out that US Weekly made up that they had a picture of Heidi Montag's engagement ring. They just used a picture of a different ring. As you can see, they weren't the only ones looking for pics of her ring, but it's a lot harder when you actually have to find the right one. Doh.
