Come Sunday morning, we’ll probably be in bed nursing a hangover, but 38,000 overachievers will take to the streets to run the New York City Marathon.
New York, ever the wild metropolis, will let those runners listen to ipods on the way. Crazy, right?
Well, USA Track & Field has banned headphones from all official races. Last week at the Marine Core Marathon in D.C., runners had to sneak iPods under their shirts.
The main reason the agency wants to eliminate music players is insurance. But running purists insist that music distracts form the marathon experience.
“You want every single sense tuned in to the experience of running the race of a lifetime,” said Mary Wittenberg, the NYC Marathon’s race director.
Don’t worry: no amount of Justin Timberlake can take away from the experience of a herniated disk.
To Craig Masback, USATF CEO.
Dude! Just put a little waiver check box in the application.
Telling us we can't wear our MP-trios players or iPods is like telling us we can't be Americans!
(NOTE: Trois is 'three' in French for those of you in the middle of the country who voted for Bush.)
