Graydon Carter has such a hard on right now, as Vanity Fair releases its most Vanity Fair-esque piece to date on the defrauded, jet-setting Raffaello Follieri. What makes the seven-page article so perfectly VF, with its mix of celebrity and scandal and a dash of eau de creep?
The piece shrewdly keeps the spotlight away from Follieri, for one. The introduction to the Italian lothario begins, "Anne Hathaway had broken up with him—sort of—10 days before."
We knew there was a reason to care about Follieri aside from his white collar indictments. If VF ran an article for every corrupt 30-something multimillionaire, there wouldn't be any space left for Annie Leibowitz to push underage skin.
Like his appearance on the public's radar, Follieri's relationship with the demure actress has always been his biggest selling point, despite his having "close ties" with the Vatican back in Rome. (Pope, or The Princess Diaries?)
And though Hathaway declined to VF's interview request and keeps mum on the subject of her ex, Michael Shnayerson does a decent write-around by scoring soundbites from friends of the entrepreneur who overheard Anne's side of the break-up convo: "You were the love of my life. I’ll always love you. You know that, baby." Yes, VF is Us Weekly.
But for an expose on Follieri, there are still some 50 references to the Get Smart star who was only tangentially involved in the whole affair. If Vanity Fair was a person, Hathaway would be advised to get a restraining order against the obsessive stalker before Graydon is found wearing her skin. Or naming her to some snooty list.

Someone needs to finally tell Carter to lose the Bozo The Clown haircut.
Hathaway is no peach. She had a hand in the attention she is getting on this. Graydon Carter has nothing to do with her cooing and defending her criminal boyfriend which she did outwardly and frequently despite signs. She's the BOZO the clown, not Vanity Fair. She is a tool, not particularly bright, talks too much for her own good and doesn't acknowledge she is naive, thinks she knows it all. I know her personally. There were too many signs she CHOSE to ignore. I am really over her and all the publicity of a rising star she is getting, this is a less than special person and actor. Quick to rise, quicker to fall.
I agree with peachy keen. There were alot of signs that Hathaway chose to ignore. It's not like she was with him for a few months or a year, this was almost 5 years she had a relationship with the guy and she refused to back down until the US government got involved and it threatened her career. Screw her. Graydon Carter has every right to cover her however the hell he damn well pleases. She's a complete fraud too as far as I am concerned. I.E. SHE Isn't smart and is not getting smart either.
