VF's McCain Witch Hunt Kind of Silly
Calling Bullshit on Outrage

News broke today that Vanity Fair and the National Security News Service are in a legal battle with the United States Navy over documents they believe prove John McCain's involvement in a car accident that injured or killed another person.

Vanity Fair magazine and the National Security News Service claim to have knowledge "developed from first-hand sources" of a car crash that involved then-Lt. McCain at the main gate of a Virginia naval base in 1964, according to legal filings. The incident has been largely, if not entirely, kept from the public. And in documents suing the Navy to release pertinent information, lawyers for the NS News Service allege that a cover-up may be at play

Yikes! But maybe not…

Let's assume John McCain did kill someone in a car accident 44 years ago—that's a tragedy, but, um, so what? Ted Kennedy took a life in a car accident too. As did Laura Bush. And both of them have served admirably for years (as has McCain, we might add). It's silly and wildly conservative to think that every mistake in a person's history should reflect on their fitness for civil service.

If Vanity Fair believes there's official military documentation of McCain's alleged accident, that means the incident has already been vetted by certain legal bodies and deemed a non-issue. Now, if VF and the NSNS are out to get these documents in order to indict the entire criminal justice system, which notoriously favors people of wealth and privilege, then they're onto something important, albeit trite. But if they're out to smear the Republican nominee for "killing" a man, they're up to no good.

How about everyone sticks to tearing apart all the bullshit McCain's done that isn't attached to the word "accident."

Yes, it's water under the bridge. If it was just a mistake or tragic accident, it's not worth our time. However, if it involved some sort of road-rage incident, I believe the public should know about it, as it speaks to the temperament of one who would have his finger "on the button".

There are many documented cases of McCain losing his temper. If it once resulted in serious injury or death, I think that's newsworthy.

Wow - really? You think this is a witch hunt? Silly? Trite? And did you actually say, "if they're out to smear the Republican nominee for killing a man, they're up to no good."?

John McCain has engaged in the dirtiest smear campaign since Bush loosed his pitbulls on him in 2000 and you're crying foul because a magazine uncovered the fact that he KILLED someone?

A stunning opinion.

Hey, if the fact that Obama was somewhere with some guy who was a radical when he was eight is significant, heck yeah - this is. Especially, if there has been an orchestrated effort to cover it up.

McCain opened this door when he declared open season on anyone Obama has spoken to in the last 20 years…and if this was covered up because his father was the Navy Admiral, I definitely think it needs to come out.

Covering up murder is important. If he will cover up murder , what other mistakes will he attempt to cover up ? Our next oil war ? This may have been an innocent accident , but it also may have been drunk driving ! If I was caught killing someone with my car while driving drunk , it would be murder. Lets get the facts !

If trumpeting your ancient prisoner of war years as shaping your ability to lead is so crucial, then certainly maiming or killing someone and then playing part in a cover-up is indicative of your inability…

Straight talk express???

I'm not one for drudging up the past but it is disconcerting to me that the (fatal!)accidents of the rich and well connected are brushed under the rug as if they never happened. The Kennedy's should not have been able to get away with it and neither should the McCain's. Is 'Personal Responsibility' only for the rest of us?
