Looking for that exact moment when Angelina Jolie's interview with Anderson Cooper last night started looking more like an Oprah Goes To Africa special than actual journalism? It took a whopping 3.5 minutes from the beginning of the 2-hour program for us to find it. Speaking about a refugee camp:
Angelina: It was probably, to this day, the worst camp I'd ever seen.
Anderson: Had you ever seen anything like that before?
Angelina: I hadn't seen anything like that.
To recap: Angelina says it's the worst camp she'd ever seen. Anderson, not convinced, asks a follow-up: Yes, but had she seen anything like that before? Angelina is sticking to her guns: Dammit Anderson, she hadn't seen anything like that. Bravo, Coop. Turns out cyclical interviewing isn't just for Larry King.

Well, of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I disagree with you. As a person who doesn't know much about Jolie and a little more about Africa, I'm afraid to admit, I found the interview intelligent, and enlightening. I found it less an interview, more of a conversation between two caring people who both have the family background (read: lots of money) to have chosen more superficial scatterbrain fruitless lives, but destiny and their own intelligence and sensitivity pointed them in a direction where they could make a charitable and indelible contribution to a world in need of some care and love and attention.
I think it was a very smart structure. They laid the whole AJ interview into two hours so everyone (who wished to see AJ) had to wait until the end and watch the whole thing.
And I guess all the people who tuned in know much more about the whole situation then before.
I strongly believe it served the purpose.
I totally agree with you and I believe that the REASON Angelina was willing to sit down for this interview at all, was because Cooper presented to her as a means to an end. I'm betting he said to her, "I'm doing a thing on the African plight, who can we capitalize on your experiences and and "hot" fame at the moment and do something good". Like I said, -two smart, media savvy, people who are going to go far and deserve respect.
After last night's interview, I am more impressed with Jolie than ever. She seems very genuine and is truly a woman of substance. It's fascinating to watch her mouth move, too. I think if her mouth told me to personally go to Darfur and make a refugee tent out of my skin, I would have no choice but to do it.
having a two hour interview on cnn's prime
at the age of 30 about africa and refugees!
wow!
I also have to disagree with you. It was not the best interview I've seen Cooper do, but I got the feeling he was nervous! She did a great interview and CNN did a good job of interspersing clips. Having been to Africa, I was thrilled that some of those that can't speak for themselves (refugees, women of rape, children starving etc). I'd far rather watch Jolie and her well thought out views on refugees and Africa than to catch the self-promoting Paris Hilton on anything. I too have a new respect for Jolie.
Shame on CNN for relying on celebrity accounts of war and poverty. How about Anderson interviewing actual refugees and political leaders? Let's hold the leaders of these countries responsible and accountable.
Where did the journalists and news go? Are there no ethical standards, oh wait nice ratings to go with Jolie hot pink lipgloss.
PR is NOT NEWS. Brangelina go home.
I think the people who still don't know what's going on in this world must open their ignorant eyes.
I also believe that AJ was a wrong choice of guest to talk about refugees.
She invaded a country, has been known to bribe governments (and the biggest source of money for the militant groups in Africa is bribery)
Also, she really doesn't offer anything new to the discussion.
Just the same old: i went there, it was awful, i felt bad for these poor people etc
they should tell us how much money was donated after the show.
i'm sure they can track that.
I read somewhere that it was about 100 000$
