Whoops, Palin Spent Way More on Clothes Than You Were Told
Time to hulk out

People who were shocked and angry to find out that Sarah Palin received a $150,000 shopping spree during her run as VP candidate for the Republican party are not going to be pleased that the number might have actually just been a conservative estimate:

According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent ‘tens of thousands’ more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide … said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.”

Oh. This is not going to be good for the next woman who wants to run for office.

She had aides buy her clothing on their credit card and then ask the campaign for reimbursements? That's a new standard of low, and frankly, couldn't have been better written by the most misogynistic sexist in the world. I've said that we shouldn't focus on how much Palin spent in clothes, because it focused too much on a "woman's issue" and thus the argument lent itself to scrutiny that we were only discussing clothing because Palin was a woman.

It's sad to find out that the Alaskan governor is such a grifter that we need to reopen the thread and keep discussing it. Because the clothes were supposed to go to charity after the campaign, and if some of the items are "missing" now, then Sarah Palin is effectively robbing the GOP.

Not that this couldn't just be a case of pin-the-blame-on-the-woman, but that's exactly why our next female candidate has to be so scrupulous about monitoring her spending records.

While this is an awesomely funny story, there is no proof that this is real just yet. More than likely if you look at the comments mad by the "staff" it sounds like the McCain camp is trying to send her down in flames. Now, I totally dislike Palin, but I don't accept propaganda as character assasination against anyone.

Let see, Obama got a $2,000,000 break on a housing deal from Resko and you're still worried about a self made successful woman

In the fourth paragraph "buy" is spelled "by." Maybe you should spend more time spellchecking than looking at the spending habits of others.

Who cares?? Seriously, who cares? No one would have said a thing if she were a man. It's not relevant and even less interesting.

Actually, I don't consider this a women's issue - John Edwards was (rightly) criticized for spending $400 on a haircut. I also think that if a man had done this, he would be equally under fire.

If the GOP isn't bitching, why should you?? This isn't coming from taxpayers. The money comes from people who donate money to the RNC. Get over it. Spending obscene amounts of money on hair, makeup and clothes is not a new trend, people.

Mr T,
I think you need to look up the definition of fascist.

Never mind…I'll do it for you.
"The most notable characteristic of a fascist country is the separation and persecution or denial of equality to a specific segment of the population based upon superficial qualities or belief systems.

Simply stated, a fascist government always has one class of citizens that is considered superior (good) to another (bad) based upon race, creed or origin." Don't see how Obama can be a fascist. Palin, maybe.

True. It is, however, insanely hypocritical when you're trying to present yourself as just yer average gee shucks hockey mom in carharrdts, gosh darn it. A few suits for the campaign, if she didn't already have them or have the ability to pay for them herself, okay. $150K? and even more? and clothes for her husband and kids? She comes across as delusional and sneaky at best, hypocritical, deceptive and thieving (yeah right, they're "missing") at best.

(I also agree we need better substantiation of the details — I'd love for TSG to track down the disgruntled donor or the aides who were asked to use their personal credit cards along with some receipts, for example.) In any case. She has behaved terribly unprofessionally all along in an attempt to be "folksy." And enough people saw through it.

Why did she spend all of the money on clothes? Why not buy a new car or a rolex?

This really is a non-issue. The money did not come from the taxpayers so why should anybody care? And the peon staffers who agreed to pay for this woman's clothing with their personal credit cards were totally stupid and deserve it if they are not paid back. What idiots!!!

Edwards was criticized for charging a 400$ haircut to his campaign. He later reimbursed the campaign. The point is that political candidates are supposed to buy their own clothes with their own money. No one is criticizing Cindy McCain (who spends much, much more than Palin) because Cindy buys her clothes with her own money. Nobody is criticizing the Obamas because they too buy their clothes with their own money.

Re: Taking advantage of low-level staffers' personal credit. It's just wrong to take advantage of people who are working under you. They were probably afraid they would be fired and given a bad reference. She used low-level staffers to hide her purchases from her peers. Sneaky…

Let's not forget that she charged Alaska for her children's travel(43,000$) and also charged 17,000$ worth of per diems for staying overnight at her own home. AND she didn't pay taxes on the money she received!

So let's connect the dots…it's not about CLOTHES it's about CHARACTER and these stories illustrate that Palin is lacking. She's just a pig at the trough. I'd criticize a man for doing the same thing.

You're an idiot. Nobody is focusing on the clothing thing because she's a woman, they're focusing on the clothing thing because she thought it would be okay to spend 150k in money that isn't hers. Just plain stupid. Stop being so sensitive and stop giving her a pass on being corrupt and selfish.

Good God when the McCain aides think they know the answer to the entire campaign then we should all bow down and be thankful that John McCain isn't president.
Leave Sara Palin alone. She's everything I want in a powerful woman and I am not going to throw her out of office no less my bed for that matter.
Please Sara, stick around, get a radio show and make us your candidate next time around.
The fact is the democrats make have a longer run than usual since in economic times such as these the poor need our help and it takes a democrat to do so. Read up on FDR and find out how many thought he was a socialist but he saved us and got us through the war and we came back strong.

Why is George Herbert Walker Bush an influencial aid to Obama?
Why are the New World Order cronies on him already?
Why are the Jews so strongly behind him if he is going to hurt Israel?
What the hell is the Illuminati?
Why is there always a group that thinks it can control the world?
Why there never has to be blood spilled if we each think about a clean, free, peaceful world!
Make it happen. Change can happen!
