Who's Out to Deng-Dong Rupert Murdoch?

From left to right: Wendi Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch, Tom Anderson, Chris DeWolfe

The media's favorite parlor game — and soon-to-be game show hosted by Jeff Foxworthy — that's going on right now: Who's out to smear Rupert Murdoch and wife Wendi Deng, by alleging she had/is having an affair with MySpace chief Chris DeWolfe, as Jossip reported last week? One guess comes courtesy of Gawker, which wouldn't touch the story until somebody else (us) reported it, who's putting their money on Fox News head Roger Ailes. Other unsubstantiated guesses we heard surfacing from last night's party at Milk Studios to celebrate the new Murdoch book from Newser.com's Michael Wolff, The Man Who Owns the News: Ms. Deng's legal counsel(!); Rick Kaplan, the former SVP at ABC News, former MSNBC president, and current CBS Evening News exec producer; and, um, Mr. Wolff himself, in an effort to drum up book sales. Watching others guess the identity of the hitjob artist is about as imperfect a science as figuring out whether the rumor is true.

Update: Mr. Wolff disapproves of our mentioning his name as among those his party guests considered to be the source. He responds:

Neither I, nor anyone involved with my book, The Man Who Owns the News, has ever implied, suggested, or in any way speculated about Wendi Murdoch's involvement with Chris De Wolf. The rumor is acknowledge and dismissed in my book. When media outlets, including Gawker and the New York Times, have called me about this rumor in the last few weeks, I've said that I gave it close attention during the writing of the book and satisfied myself that it was not true. There can be no basis for your suggestion that I'm involved in spreading what I believe to be a falsehood. I'd very much appreciate a correction.

Is this guy for real? I'd appreciate a corrrection too. The world would be a better place if Wolff was erased from the face of it.
