Uh oh! Will.I.am, he of crap.py quartet the Black Eyed Peas, got a big head in light of the success of his "Yes We Can" video. Prepare to be positive video-ed to death.
On Thursday in New York City, Will, his band mate apl.de.ap, musician Angelique Kidjo, actress Kristin Davis and model Elle Macpherson all helped launch a "new" campaign to halve global poverty by 2015. Neat, if not really new.
In fact, this campaign is an initiative to help revitalize a plan originally put into motion eight years ago by the United Nations. Many of the countries the UN had hoped would be well on their way to destroying poverty by now are nowhere near achieving their goals. Clearly, this is a job for apl.de.ap.
Kidjo and Black Eyed Peas members Will.I.am and apl.de.ap performed a new song written for the Global Call to Action against Poverty called "in my name" outside the United Nations, where world leaders are gathered this week.
"It's calling individuals to realize their power in solving global poverty and ending world hunger," Will.I.am sang. "Enforcing the politicians to keep what they promised and picking the world leaders that will lead the world honest."
(Um, we haven't heard the song, but we're pretty sure "Enforcing the politicians" is probably "And forcing the politicians," but: neither here nor there.)
Anyway, yay celebrities! Thanks for that! Sounds like we're well on our way to eliminating poverty, which affects, what, like a couple hundred people?
Oh, and yay YouTube, also. In conjunction with celebrities singing new songs about the new-old campaign to end decades-old poverty, the video sharing site has created a channel in which users can upload footage of themselves pleading for the world's governments to end poverty. It's already a massive success. Just check out some of the reactions:
• "Goodluck ending poverty and make there be no more crimes while you're at it."
• "communists!
you promote socio-communist ideologies!
STOP public schooling! STOP public health care
people should have equal chance, right, but they shouldn't be given things. let them make them themselves
don't bring communism back!
communism is evil!"
• "fuck islam!"
• "I love seeing rich celebs getting free publicity like this. It really warms my heart. Now they could feed a nation for a year with their shoe budget but whatever :)"
Make them stop, apl.de.ap!!!!!!!
